Clone / Remix Mode
Clone mode analyzes an existing thumbnail's visual style and creates a new thumbnail for your video using that same look. Provide a reference, enter your video title, and the AI adapts the style to your topic.
What Clone Mode Does
Instead of brainstorming from scratch, clone mode starts with a specific visual style you already like. The AI:
- Analyzes the reference thumbnail's visual characteristics (composition, colors, text treatment, mood).
- Extracts the key style elements that make it work.
- Generates a new thumbnail for your video title that follows the same visual approach.
This is especially useful when you have found a thumbnail style that performs well and want to maintain that look across multiple videos.
Providing a Reference
You can provide a reference in two ways:
YouTube URL
Paste any YouTube video URL into the reference input field and click Use YouTube URL. Subscribr automatically fetches the video's thumbnail and uses it as your style reference. This is the fastest approach when you are inspired by a specific video.
Image Upload
Click the upload area or drag and drop an image file. Supported formats are JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP, with a maximum size of 10MB. Use this when you have a thumbnail saved locally or want to reference a design that is not on YouTube.
After loading your reference, a preview appears so you can confirm it is the right image. Click Remove if you want to swap it for a different one.
Style Analysis
When you submit in clone mode, the AI performs a style analysis on your reference thumbnail. This extracts:
- Color palette -- The dominant colors and how they are used.
- Composition -- How elements are arranged (faces, text, objects, negative space).
- Text treatment -- Font style, size, placement, and any effects (outlines, shadows, glow).
- Mood and tone -- Whether it is bright and energetic, dark and dramatic, clean and minimal, etc.
- Visual techniques -- Specific approaches like before/after splits, zoomed-in faces, product showcases, or background contrasts.
The AI then applies these extracted characteristics to create a thumbnail that is visually consistent with the reference but tailored to your video's unique title and topic.
How the Style Is Applied to Your Topic
Clone mode does not copy the reference thumbnail pixel-for-pixel. Instead, it transfers the visual approach:
- If the reference uses bold red text over a dark background, your thumbnail will follow a similar text treatment.
- If the reference features a close-up face with an expressive reaction, your thumbnail will incorporate a similar composition.
- If the reference has a specific color scheme, the generated thumbnail will echo those colors while adapting to your content.
The result is a thumbnail that feels like it belongs to the same visual family as the reference but is entirely original to your video.
Combine with Video Topic
Adding a description in the "What's the video about?" field helps the AI understand which elements from the reference style are most relevant to your content. A tech review and a cooking tutorial might use the same style differently.
When to Use Clone vs. Brainstorm
| Scenario | Recommended Mode |
|---|---|
| You want fresh creative ideas | Brainstorm |
| You know exactly the style you want | Clone |
| You are building a consistent series look | Clone |
| You are exploring different visual directions | Brainstorm |
| You found a competitor's thumbnail style you admire | Clone |
| You are starting a new channel without a defined style | Brainstorm |
| You want to match your existing channel aesthetic | Either (Brainstorm uses channel formats automatically) |
Tips for Better Clone Results
Choose high-quality references. The clearer and more distinctive the reference thumbnail's style, the better the AI can extract and replicate its characteristics. Avoid blurry or generic references.
Match the content type. A reference from a vlog-style thumbnail works best when your video is also a vlog. The AI adapts well across genres, but staying within a similar content type produces more natural results.
Use specific video titles. Just like brainstorm mode, a specific and descriptive video title gives the AI more context for making smart style decisions.
Next Steps
- Improve your thumbnails with feedback, re-generation, and AI-powered suggestions.
- Set up thumbnail settings to establish default style preferences for your channel.
