Controlling How Subscribr Writes

Subscribr offers several ways to influence how your scripts are written. Understanding these levers helps you get output that matches your exact creative vision.

The Four Levers

There are four main ways to shape Subscribr's writing output:

  1. Channel Voice - Controls tone, style, and personality
  2. Templates - Defines structure and pacing
  3. Custom Templates - Create templates from videos you admire
  4. AI Models - Different models have different writing characteristics

Each lever affects different aspects of the output. Use them together for precise control.

Channel Voice

Your channel voice defines how things are said - the tone, vocabulary, sentence structure, and personality of your scripts.

When to Adjust Your Voice

Consider refining your voice if scripts:

  • Sound too formal or too casual
  • Use vocabulary that doesn't feel like "you"
  • Have pacing that's too slow or too fast
  • Miss your signature phrases or style

Simple vs Advanced Mode

Simple Mode lets you give natural language feedback:

  • "Make it more conversational"
  • "Use shorter sentences"
  • "Add more energy"
  • "Sound more authoritative"

Advanced Mode gives direct access to all voice parameters including speaker archetype, delivery recipe, rhetorical toolkit, and diction settings.

Start with Simple Mode

For most users, Simple Mode provides enough control. Use Advanced Mode only when you need granular adjustments to specific aspects of your voice.

Creating Multiple Voices

Some creators need different voices for different content types. You can create multiple voice profiles and switch between them per script.

Templates

Templates define the structure of your scripts - how sections are organized, where hooks go, how to transition between ideas, and overall pacing.

Built-in Templates

Subscribr includes several templates optimized for different content types:

Template Best For
Flexible Any content type - adapts to your needs
Educational Tutorials, how-tos, teaching content
Documentary Story-driven, investigative deep dives
Commentary Opinion pieces, reactions, analysis
Review Product reviews, comparisons
Explainer Breaking down complex topics

The Flexible Template

If you find other templates too constraining, try Flexible. It provides minimal structure and prioritizes your feedback over formatting rules. This is ideal for:

  • Experienced creators with established formats
  • Remixing content from other videos
  • Unconventional video structures
  • Maximum creative control

Changing Templates

You can set a default template in Channel Settings, or change templates when creating individual scripts.

Creating Custom Templates

When you find a video structure that works well - whether it's your own video or someone else's - you can capture that structure as a reusable template.

How It Works

  1. Go to your channel's Templates page
  2. Click "New Template"
  3. Provide 1-5 YouTube video URLs
  4. Give your template a name
  5. Subscribr analyzes the transcripts and creates a template capturing:
    • Section breakdown and organization
    • Hook patterns and transitions
    • Pacing and timing
    • Structural flow

When to Create Custom Templates

Create custom templates when:

  • You find a video structure that consistently works
  • You want to replicate a competitor's successful format
  • Your content follows a unique structure not covered by built-in templates
  • You want to standardize a format across your team

Combining Multiple Videos

You can provide multiple videos when creating a template. Subscribr synthesizes the best elements from each, creating a template that captures patterns across all sources.

Clone Then Customize

After generation, you can edit any custom template to fine-tune it. Start with AI-generated structure, then adjust based on your preferences.

AI Models

Different AI models have subtly different writing characteristics. While all models follow your voice and template, they interpret instructions differently.

Model Differences

Models vary in:

  • Speed - How quickly they generate content
  • Length adherence - How closely they hit your target word count
  • Writing style - Subtle differences in tone and flow
  • Creativity - How literally vs. creatively they interpret prompts

Choosing the Right Model

There's no universally "best" model. Consider:

  • If scripts are too long or short, try a different model
  • If generation feels slow during editing, switch to a faster model
  • If the style doesn't click, experiment with alternatives

Changing Models

Set your default model in Channel Settings, or change models within the Canvas for specific scripts.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Scripts Don't Sound Like Me

Primary cause: Voice profile needs refinement

Try:

  1. Use Simple Mode to give specific feedback
  2. Provide writing samples when training your voice
  3. Use Advanced Mode to adjust specific parameters

Wrong Structure or Pacing

Primary cause: Template mismatch

Try:

  1. Switch to a different built-in template
  2. Use Flexible template for more control
  3. Create a custom template from a video with structure you like

Length Is Consistently Off

Primary cause: Model interpretation

Try:

  1. Switch to a different AI model
  2. Be more explicit about length in your prompts
  3. Provide feedback in chat to recalibrate

Too Formulaic or Generic

Primary cause: Template too rigid

Try:

  1. Switch to Flexible template
  2. Create a custom template
  3. Give specific feedback in chat about what to change

Recommended Approach

For best results:

  1. Start with voice - Get your voice profile sounding right first
  2. Pick a template - Choose one that matches your typical content
  3. Experiment with models - Try different models for the same content
  4. Create custom templates - When you find winning structures, capture them

Iterate, Don't Perfect

It's better to create content and refine settings over time than to spend hours tweaking before writing your first script. Real feedback from real scripts helps you dial in settings faster.
